South Korea’s Lee heads to Washington after Japan visit for first summit with Trump

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is concluding his two-day visit to Japan on Sunday before heading to Washington for a high-stakes summit with US President Donald Trump.

During his Tokyo stop, Lee met Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Saturday, where the two leaders agreed to boost cooperation on regional security and global trade challenges, while also reaffirming the importance of trilateral ties with the United States. Calling Japan an “indispensable partner,” Lee emphasized his commitment to strengthening relations with Seoul’s closest neighbor.

Lee will now travel to Washington for his first in-person meeting with Trump at the White House, with talks expected to focus on trade and security. The agenda includes follow-up discussions on the July tariff deal that lowered US duties on Korean goods from 25% to 15% in exchange for Seoul’s $350 billion investment pledge and other commitments.

The summit is also expected to address US demands for higher South Korean defense spending and possible changes to the structure of US Forces Korea, as Washington seeks to counter China’s growing assertiveness.

Alongside the bilateral summit, Lee will join a business roundtable with leading executives from both nations and deliver a keynote at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He is also set to visit Hanwha Philly Shipyard in Philadelphia before returning to Seoul.
