Marco Rubio, Israeli FM Sa’ar reaffirm ‘vital’ ties, vow to counter Iran

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Israeli Foreign Minister Gidon Sa’ar in Washington on Wednesday, underscoring the “vital” partnership between the two nations and their joint commitment to regional security.

Rubio said on X that the meeting reaffirmed “close cooperation that is vital to ensuring security and prosperity in the region.” Sa’ar thanked Rubio for his longstanding support of Israel and praised the backing from President Donald Trump’s administration.

Talks focused on the Iranian nuclear threat, Hamas conflict in Gaza, Lebanon and Syria tensions, and preparations for the upcoming UN General Assembly session. Both leaders also pledged to resist anti-Israel moves at the international level.

Rubio stressed the need to counter “Iran’s malign influence.” Sa’ar’s office confirmed discussions on triggering snapback sanctions against Tehran.

The US State Department said Rubio also consulted with European counterparts — French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy — all reaffirming their determination to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
