Monsoon fury leaves 221 dead, hundreds injured across Pakistan

At least 221 people have died and 592 others injured in Pakistan as relentless monsoon rains triggered flash floods and other weather-related disasters since late June, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported on Monday.

The NDMA’s latest update, covering the period from June 26 to July 21, recorded five additional deaths and 10 injuries in the past 24 hours alone.

Punjab province has borne the brunt of the devastation, with 135 fatalities and 470 injuries. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 46 people have died and 69 others sustained injuries. Sindh has reported 22 deaths and 40 injuries, while 16 fatalities occurred in Balochistan, which also reported four injuries. A child was injured in the Islamabad Capital Territory.

Authorities have issued flood alerts and are working with provincial governments to carry out relief and rescue efforts in affected areas. Several regions remain on high alert as rivers swell and the risk of further flooding persists due to ongoing rainfall.

The NDMA and Punjab’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) have urged citizens to stay away from low-lying or flood-prone zones and to remain cautious as conditions remain unstable.

The monsoon, intensified by moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea, continues to cause widespread disruptions, particularly in eastern Punjab. In Lahore, intermittent rain has led to increased humidity levels and worsened urban flooding.

With the monsoon season still underway, authorities remain concerned about further casualties and damage. Relief operations are ongoing across the most affected provinces, and the government has pledged to continue monitoring and responding to the crisis.
