MoS Margherita engages with Indian community, leadership in Papua New Guinea

Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita interacted with members of the Indian community in Papua New Guinea (PNG), highlighting their role as a “living bridge” between the two nations.

During a community gathering in Port Moresby, Margherita praised the 4,000-strong Indian diaspora for strengthening India-PNG ties through cultural, economic, and community contributions. He described the interaction as a “heartwarming evening with our vibrant Indian family in Papua New Guinea.”

The visit comes as PNG celebrates its 50th anniversary of independence. On Monday, Margherita called on Prime Minister James Marape, conveying greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening bilateral and people-to-people relations.

“Honoured to call on Hon‘ble James Marape, Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea. Conveyed warm greetings from PM Shri Narendra Modi ji and the people of India on the occasion of #PNGAt50. Both countries remain committed to deepening ties,” Margherita posted on X.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the visit reflects India’s ongoing engagement with the Pacific Island Countries (PICs), building on the momentum of the 3rd Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) Summit held in Port Moresby in May 2023. Prime Minister Modi had co-chaired the summit with Marape, underscoring India’s commitment to the Pacific region.

India and PNG have continued to expand cooperation in development, trade, and defence. The visit by Margherita is expected to further strengthen dialogue with PNG’s political leadership and enhance collaboration under India’s “Act East” policy and broader Indo-Pacific vision.
