Myanmar Quake: 80% Building Clearance Completed in Mandalay

Around 80 per cent of the building clearance operations in Myanmar’s Mandalay region have been completed following the massive earthquake that struck the country on March 28, according to state media reports. In Sagaing, another severely affected region, about 50 per cent of the cleanup has been completed.

In Mandalay, major roads have been cleared of debris to ensure commuter safety and restore normal transportation. The Myanmar Fire Brigade Headquarters confirmed the progress, noting the urgent need to remove obstacles and maintain accessibility in the quake-hit area.

Sagaing’s cleanup efforts continue with the help of heavy machinery to clear debris from large structures, including Buddhist learning centres and religious buildings situated on elevated ground.

As of Tuesday, authorities reported the recovery of 103 bodies and the successful rescue of 52 individuals from the collapsed Sky Villa condominium in Mandalay. These efforts are being led by the Myanmar Rescue Team, Fire Services Department, and regional government personnel.

Nationwide, the earthquake has resulted in 3,759 deaths and left 5,107 people injured, with 114 still reported missing. In total, emergency teams have rescued 653 people, while 779 bodies have been retrieved as of Thursday, according to local media.

Myanmar has also experienced 157 aftershocks since the initial 7.7-magnitude quake, with magnitudes ranging from 2.8 to 7.5, causing additional concern and complicating rescue and recovery operations.
