New York State Senate marks 75th anniversary of Indian Constitution
The New York State Senate has adopted a resolution commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution. Introduced by Indian-origin Senator Jeremy Cooney, the resolution honors India’s democratic values and its shared commitment with the United States to liberty, justice, and equality.
Speaking about his personal connection to India, Senator Cooney—who was adopted from Kolkata—expressed pride in celebrating his Indian heritage. “As an orphan from Kolkata, I’m incredibly proud to celebrate this important landmark with my colleagues and all New Yorkers,” he posted on X.
The event was attended by Consul General of India in New York, Binaya Pradhan, and members of the Indian-American community, highlighting the cultural and democratic bonds between the two nations.
During his address, Cooney reflected on India’s struggle for independence from British rule, the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, and the adoption of the Constitution on November 26, 1949.
“This story of resilience and the fight for self-determination is one of the bonds that ties our two great nations together,” he said.
The Senator added that this celebration serves as a global tribute to Indian democracy and a moment for communities worldwide to honor shared history and heritage.
