Nine Killed in Three-Vehicle Crash in Peru, 16 Injured
A tragic three-vehicle collision on the Costanera Highway in Tacna, Peru, resulted in at least nine fatalities and left 16 others injured.
The accident occurred on Sunday night at kilometer 31, near a curve known as ‘El Chasqui’ in the La Yarada-Los Palos district. It involved a bus from the Vilca transport company, a private car, and a truck carrying Andean products and sheep, according to Xinhua news agency, citing the state news agency Andina.
Following the crash, several passengers from the bus and the truck driver were trapped in the wreckage, while the occupants of the private car reportedly fled the scene.
Witnesses indicated that the private car had crossed into the wrong lane, causing the accident. Beer cans found inside the vehicle have raised suspicions about the possibility of intoxication.
Emergency services, including firefighters and multiple ambulances from the Emergency Medical Service (SAMU) and local health facilities, quickly responded to the incident.
Eddy Vicente Choque, director of Hipolito Unanue Regional Hospital, confirmed that 16 injured individuals were admitted on Sunday night. By Monday morning, six had been discharged, while 10 remained hospitalized.
