Pakistan sides with China, Russia against US on Iran strikes

Pakistan stood firmly with China and Russia at the United Nations Security Council in opposing the United States over its recent strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites, despite speculation about renewed US-Pakistan ties following Army Chief General Asim Munir’s meeting with former US President Donald Trump.

At the emergency session convened after the US bombed three of Iran’s nuclear facilities, Pakistan’s UN envoy Asim Iftikhar Ahmad condemned the US airstrikes and called them a violation of international law and the UN Charter. He said the attacks followed “brazen Israeli assaults” and must be unequivocally condemned.

“Pakistan, along with our all-weather friend China and strategic partner Russia, is circulating a draft resolution calling on the Council to reject these actions,” Ahmad stated.

While Munir’s recent White House lunch with Trump triggered speculation of a thaw in US-Pakistan military ties, Islamabad’s official stance at the UN clearly aligned with Tehran, Moscow, and Beijing.

Ahmad stressed that the strikes on Iran’s IAEA-safeguarded nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan violated Security Council and IAEA resolutions as well as humanitarian law.

He also voiced Pakistan’s strong support for Iran’s right to self-defense under the UN Charter, and sharply criticized Israel’s role in escalating the conflict.

“Pakistan has strongly and unambiguously condemned the Israeli aggression and expressed full solidarity with Iran,” Ahmad told the Council.

The resolution being drafted by Pakistan, China, and Russia is expected to face stiff opposition from the US and its allies, but reflects a growing bloc within the Council that opposes unilateral military actions.
