Pakistan calls IWT suspension an act of war
Pakistan’s National Security Committee (NSC), chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, convened a high-level emergency meeting on Thursday in response to India’s post-Pahalgam attack measures. The committee condemned the attack but strongly denied Indian allegations of Pakistan’s involvement in cross-border terrorism.
Key decisions included immediate closure of Pakistani airspace for India, expulsion of Indian defence advisors, and limiting diplomatic staff at both Indian and Pakistani High Commissions to 30 officers. Pakistan also announced the closure of the Wagah-Attari border in retaliation to India’s border restrictions.
A major flashpoint emerged over India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), which Pakistan described as an “act of war”. The NSC vowed to take up the matter with the World Bank and other international forums, asserting that India cannot unilaterally act on a treaty involving global stakeholders.
Pakistan’s military leadership expressed full readiness to counter any Indian action, vowing a “fitting response” to any perceived misadventure.
The NSC accused New Delhi of spreading an anti-Pakistan narrative without proof and reaffirmed Islamabad’s intention to challenge India’s decisions diplomatically and strategically.
