PM Modi Arrives in Russia for BRICS Summit in Kazan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kazan on Tuesday to participate in the 16th BRICS Summit, invited by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The summit, themed “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,” will serve as a key platform for global leaders to address significant international issues.

In his departure statement, PM Modi emphasized India’s commitment to BRICS as an important forum for dialogue on global development, reformed multilateralism, climate change, economic cooperation, and cultural connections. He noted that the expansion of BRICS last year enhanced its inclusivity and global agenda.

Modi stated, “Building on the Annual Summit held in July 2024 in Moscow, my visit will further strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. I look forward to meeting other BRICS leaders.”

In addition to the summit discussions, Modi is expected to engage in bilateral meetings with counterparts from BRICS member countries and invited leaders. The agenda includes addressing current global and regional issues, focusing on politics, security, economics, and cultural contacts.

The summit will also consider the expansion of BRICS and plans for a new category of partner states. Reports from various BRICS institutions will be presented, culminating in the Kazan Summit Declaration.

On Wednesday, an outreach meeting will involve representatives from nearly 40 countries, including leaders from CIS nations and delegations from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America, with discussions focusing on current international challenges, particularly in the Middle East.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with many attending leaders during the summit.
