Devotion beyond borders: PM Modi praises Vietnam’s reverence for Buddha relics

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming response from Vietnam to the exposition of Lord Buddha’s sacred relics, calling it a testament to the deep spiritual bond shared by both nations.

Speaking during the 123rd episode of Mann ki Baat, Modi said, “Many people from Vietnam sent me emotional messages expressing gratitude to India for enabling the darshan of Bhagwan Buddha’s holy relics. Their sentiments were more touching than any formal thanks.”

The relics, discovered at Nagarjunakonda in Andhra Pradesh — a historic Buddhist site — were taken to Vietnam on May 2 by a delegation led by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju. Originally slated to remain until May 21, the enshrinement was extended by 12 days upon request from the Vietnamese government due to immense public interest.

“These relics were displayed at nine locations, and over 1.5 crore people had the opportunity for darshan,” PM Modi said. “In a country of 10 crore, this became a national festival.”

Major Vietnamese landmarks including Thanh Tam Pagoda, Ba Den Mountain, Tam Chuc Pagoda, and Bai Dinh Pagoda hosted the relics. The Prime Minister noted that people braved rain and heat to queue for hours, reflecting boundless devotion.

“The President, Deputy Prime Minister, and ministers of Vietnam themselves offered prayers. The images I saw showed that devotion knows no limits,” he added.

Highlighting Buddha’s universal message, PM Modi said, “The teachings of Bhagwan Buddha unite cultures, countries, and hearts.”

He also encouraged Indians to visit Buddhist sites in their own states to reconnect with spiritual and cultural heritage.
