PM Modi’s Trinidad visit to boost strategic ties and diaspora bonds

Trinidad and Tobago has announced that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the Caribbean nation from July 3–4, aiming to strengthen strategic cooperation across key sectors. This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Trinidad and Tobago since 1999 and Modi’s first to the country as Prime Minister.

In a statement, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) said the visit “marks a significant milestone in the longstanding diplomatic relationship” between the two nations, which began in 1962. PM Modi’s visit will focus on deepening ties in finance, education, energy, health, ICT, legal affairs, and cultural cooperation.

This visit is part of Modi’s broader five-nation tour, which includes Ghana, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. It also coincides with the 180th anniversary of the arrival of Indian immigrants in T&T, underlining the historical and cultural connections shared by the two countries.

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), PM Modi will meet with T&T President Christine Carla Kangaloo and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. He is also expected to address a Joint Session of Parliament, where the Speaker’s chair — a gift from India — symbolizes the shared democratic traditions between the two nations.

The vibrant Indian diaspora, which comprises nearly 40–45% of T&T’s 1.36 million population, continues to serve as a vital bridge in India–T&T relations. During the visit, both sides are expected to sign several bilateral agreements in diverse areas of cooperation.

India’s outreach to the Global South remains a key priority, with this visit reinforcing its development partnerships and commitment to shared growth and strategic engagement.
