PM Modi to skip UNGA session; Jaishankar likely to deliver India’s address

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not attend or address the General Debate at the upcoming 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), according to the revised provisional list of speakers. Instead, India is expected to be represented by External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar, who is scheduled to deliver the country’s address on September 27.

The UNGA’s milestone 80th session, opening September 9, comes as the world body marks eight decades since its establishment in 1945. This year’s theme is “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights.” The high-level commemorative meeting will take place on September 22, followed by the General Debate from September 23 to 29.

As per tradition, Brazil will open the debate, followed by the United States. The updated schedule now lists India’s representative as a “minister” rather than the Prime Minister, with Jaishankar stepping in to articulate New Delhi’s priorities on the global stage. His speech will coincide with those of leaders from Israel, China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, making it a day of heightened diplomatic visibility for the region.

An earlier list released in July had named Modi as the speaker for September 26. However, the latest revision reflects changes that are not uncommon in the lead-up to the General Debate, as schedules and commitments of world leaders often shift.

The UNGA emphasized that the list of speakers remains provisional and subject to further updates. Adjustments are a standard practice during preparations for the high-level week, which draws presidents, prime ministers, and ministers from nearly 200 countries.

India’s participation at the UNGA will be closely watched as it balances its global diplomacy amid geopolitical tensions, economic challenges, and calls for UN reform.
