Pope Leo XIV elected: First American Pope begins new era

In a historic and emotionally charged moment, white smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel, signifying the election of a new Pope. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a 69-year-old American prelate from Chicago, was chosen as the 267th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV.

A historic conclave and swift decision

Prevost’s election was swift—completed within a single day—contrasting with the five rounds of voting that elected Pope Francis in 2013. The conclave brought together 133 cardinals from over 70 nations, reflecting the increasingly global fabric of the Church.

Cardinal Dominique Mamberti announced “Habemus Papam!” to a jubilant crowd in St. Peter’s Square, as Pope Leo XIV stepped forward, offering his first greeting and blessing to the faithful.

A message of peace and unity

In his inaugural address, Pope Leo XIV called for hope and togetherness in a world plagued by division and suffering.

“God loves us. God loves you all. Evil will not prevail… Without fear, united, hand in hand with God, we will move forward,” he said.

He paid homage to his predecessor, Pope Francis, saying, “We keep with us the courageous words of Pope Francis.”

Global reaction

The historic election drew swift international responses.

  • Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez welcomed a papacy that strengthens human rights.
  • Former U.S. President Donald Trump celebrated the first American to be elected Pope.
  • Faith leaders and political figures around the globe expressed cautious optimism for a papacy marked by inclusivity, service, and compassion.

Challenges on the horizon

Pope Leo XIV assumes leadership at a critical time. The Church faces declining attendance in the West, persistent financial issues, and the imperative to address clerical abuse with transparency and justice.
As the fourth consecutive non-Italian Pope, Leo XIV symbolizes a broader shift in the Church’s direction. His missionary background in Peru and experience at the Vatican offer him a unique perspective on bridging global divides.

A new chapter begins

Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re had called for a Pope who could meet both the spiritual and practical needs of today’s world. In Leo XIV, many see a leader who might rise to this occasion.

As the Catholic Church embarks on this new chapter under Pope Leo XIV, his message of hope, peace, and unity sets the tone for what could become a transformative era for over 1.3 billion Catholics across the globe.
