Putin calls talks with Trump productive amid renewed peace push
Russian President Vladimir Putin described his two-hour phone call with former U.S. President Donald Trump as “substantive” and “productive,” signaling fresh momentum for peace talks in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
“This conversation was quite candid and lasted more than two hours. I believe it was a very productive exchange,” Putin told the media. The call centered on restarting stalled negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv and came amid renewed U.S. efforts to mediate peace.
Putin thanked Trump for supporting a peaceful resolution, noting Russia’s willingness to draft a memorandum with Ukraine that includes settlement principles, timelines for a potential peace deal, and even a temporary ceasefire.
Talks between Russia and Ukraine were expected to resume in Turkey last week, but neither Putin nor Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky attended. Trump, touring West Asia at the time, also did not attend but later shared that negotiations would begin immediately, with the Vatican offering to host.
Putin highlighted resumed contact between participants of the Istanbul talks and reiterated Russia’s focus on addressing the root causes of the conflict. He emphasized the need for both sides to show strong commitment and willingness to compromise.
Trump confirmed the call’s details in a Truth Social post and said he had informed Zelensky and European leaders of the upcoming talks.
