Russia brushes off Trump’s sanctions threat as ‘theatrical ultimatum’

Russia has strongly dismissed US President Donald Trump’s warning of sweeping new sanctions, with senior Russian official Dmitry Medvedev calling it a “theatrical ultimatum” that the Kremlin simply ignores.

“Trump issued a theatrical ultimatum to the Kremlin. The world shuddered, expecting the consequences. Belligerent Europe was disappointed. Russia didn’t care,” Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, posted on X.

This marks Moscow’s first response after Trump, in a press briefing alongside NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, threatened to impose a 100% secondary tariff on nations continuing to import Russian oil, gas, and uranium. Trump gave a 50-day deadline for Russia to reach a peace agreement with Ukraine or face the severe trade penalties.

“We’re very, very unhappy with them,” Trump said. “If we don’t have a deal in 50 days, tariffs at about 100 per cent—secondary tariffs—will apply.”

The proposed tariffs are aimed not just at Russia but also at countries like China and India, major buyers of Russian energy, a move likely to disrupt global markets.

US envoy to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, said Russia is expected to respond strongly to both the tariffs and America’s renewed military aid to Ukraine. “Putin will clearly react to the weapons flow and these economic threats,” he told Fox News.

Trump also expressed personal frustration with President Vladimir Putin, claiming that he had tried to negotiate a peace deal “four times,” only to see continued missile strikes. “My conversations with him are very pleasant, and then the missiles go off at night,” Trump remarked.

The US also pledged to send Patriot missile systems and additional arms to Ukraine amid rising tensions.
