Russian missile and drone attacks kill five in Ukraine as energy sites targeted
At least five people were killed after Russia launched a large wave of missile and drone attacks across Ukraine on Saturday, Ukrainian officials said, as strikes targeted energy infrastructure and residential areas in several regions.
According to Ukrainian authorities, the overnight assault included around 430 drones and 68 missiles, many of which were intercepted by air defence systems. However, several strikes still caused significant damage and casualties.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the main target of the attack was energy infrastructure near the capital Kyiv. He added that residential buildings, schools and businesses were also damaged in the strikes.
The attacks affected multiple regions, including Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipro and Mykolaiv, highlighting the broad scope of the bombardment.
In the southeastern region of Zaporizhzhia, Russian guided bombs struck a residential area of the city, killing one person and injuring three others, according to regional governor Ivan Fedorov. Images posted online showed destroyed buildings and debris scattered across residential neighborhoods.
Officials said four of the five fatalities occurred in the region surrounding Kyiv, where at least 15 people were also injured and several districts reported significant damage.
Ukraine’s Energy Ministry said electricity supplies were disrupted in six regions following the overnight strikes and shelling along frontline areas.
Zelenskyy warned that Russia may be using the ongoing Middle East conflict as an opportunity to intensify attacks on Ukraine while global attention is focused elsewhere.
“Russia will try to exploit the war in the Middle East to cause even greater destruction here in Europe, in Ukraine,” he wrote on social media.
The strikes come as Ukraine continues to call on Western allies to increase production of air defence systems, as existing stockpiles have been stretched due to simultaneous conflicts and security challenges in other regions.
The attack also prompted NATO member Poland to scramble fighter jets to protect its airspace, although authorities later confirmed that no violations had been detected.
Meanwhile, Moldova reported that a Russian drone briefly entered its airspace near the Ukrainian border, warning that such incidents threaten regional stability.
The latest strikes underscore the continuing intensity of the conflict, which has now entered its fourth year.
