Russia Supports India’s Permanent Membership in UNSC
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that India, Brazil, and African nations should hold permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to ensure broader global representation.
In an interview with aif.ru, Lavrov emphasized that countries like India and Brazil, along with representatives from Africa, should have been granted permanent status in the Security Council long ago. He argued that this move is essential for reflecting the voices of the global majority.
At a recent high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also expressed strong support for India’s inclusion as a permanent member, alongside calls for permanent representation for African nations, Brazil, Japan, and Germany, as well as an increase in elected member seats.
Starmer highlighted the need for a more representative and responsive UN system that prioritizes the voices of the poorest and most vulnerable. He stated, “The Security Council must change to become a more representative body, willing to act—not paralyzed by politics.”
Countries such as Chile, France, Micronesia, and Portugal have also endorsed India’s bid for a permanent seat. Both the United States and Russia, as permanent members of the Security Council, support India’s aspirations for a more significant role within the UN framework.
