Russia yet to discuss peace plan details with US on Ukraine conflict
Russia and the United States are yet to discuss the finer details of a peace plan for the Ukraine conflict, according to Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya. His remarks came during a UN Security Council meeting focused on the ongoing war.
“The Russian-American dialogue is ongoing, and lots of nuances regarding the future contours of a peace plan have yet to be discussed,” said Nebenzya. He reiterated that Moscow remains committed to diplomacy as a means of resolving the conflict, stating, “We prefer diplomatic ways of attaining the objectives of our special military operation.”
Nebenzya added that Russia is seeking long-term solutions that address the root causes of the war and prevent future escalation.
On the other side, Acting Alternate Representative of the US Mission to the UN, John Kelley, acknowledged the opportunity for a lasting peace, urging both Russia and Ukraine to consider the US-backed peace framework. “The burden for ending the war rests with Russia and with Ukraine,” he said, adding that the peace process could lead to economic growth, reconstruction, and healing for both countries.
The ongoing diplomatic engagement has included a recent phone conversation between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the call focused on creating the conditions necessary to initiate peace talks.
“The parties continued a fruitful exchange of views on the key aspects of Russia-US political dialogue, which has significantly intensified recently,” the Ministry said.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also confirmed that President Vladimir Putin is open to resuming negotiations with Ukraine without preconditions. Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov described Putin’s April 25 meeting with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff as “constructive and quite useful,” noting that the three-hour conversation laid important groundwork for future peace talks.
