SCO nations condemn Pahalgam terror attack, vow to bring perpetrators to justice

Member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) have issued a strong condemnation of the April 22 terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, stressing that perpetrators, organisers, and sponsors of such violence “must be brought to justice.”

In the Tianjin Declaration, SCO leaders extended condolences to the families of victims and reaffirmed their united stance against terrorism, separatism, and extremism. Four militants of The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba, had opened fire on civilians at Baisaran Valley, killing and injuring several.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the summit in the presence of Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif, thanked partner nations for supporting India while denouncing “double standards” on terrorism. He urged SCO countries to act collectively, declaring: “This attack was not only an assault on India’s soul but a challenge to all nations that believe in humanity.”

The declaration also emphasised that no state should use terror groups for “mercenary purposes” and called for global cooperation against cross-border terrorism. The member states rejected “double standards” in counterterrorism efforts, aligning with India’s position.

Beyond security issues, the declaration welcomed the success of India-hosted initiatives, including the 5th SCO Startup Forum and the 20th SCO Think Tank Forum, highlighting New Delhi’s role in innovation and cultural exchanges.

By strongly condemning the Pahalgam attack, the SCO has signaled clear solidarity with India while sending a message to countries accused of sheltering or supporting terrorist groups.
