Elon Musk’s Starlink faces another major outage as thousands report disruptions

Elon Musk’s satellite internet service Starlink faced yet another major disruption on Monday, leaving thousands of users across the United States and beyond without connectivity.

According to outage-tracking platform Downdetector, nearly 50,000 outage reports were logged by 10:01 a.m. (EST). Of these, 59 per cent reported internet issues, 40 per cent reported a total blackout, and 1 per cent complained of poor reception.

The outage hit users across several U.S. states including Virginia, Louisiana, Indiana, and Washington, while users in Colombia also reported service disruptions. Customers reported that connectivity dropped for several minutes, with some experiencing outages lasting more than 20 minutes.

“Starlink is currently experiencing a service outage. Our team is investigating,” the company said in a status update on its website, without offering details on the cause.

Frustrated users flooded Musk’s social media platform X with complaints. “Starlink is down again. These outages are getting more frequent,” one user posted, while another wrote, “Thought it was my service, but now I see everyone has issues too.”

This is the second major disruption in weeks. In July, Starlink suffered a nearly three-hour global outage, followed by another widespread disruption last Thursday that affected users across North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. At that time, Musk apologized for the service interruption and promised improvements.

Starlink operates the world’s largest constellation of satellites with more than 6,750 in orbit, providing service in over 150 countries, including India. The company has already secured Indian clearances, been allotted trial bandwidth, and finalized 17 ground station locations. Its commercial launch in India is expected by late 2025.

The repeated outages raise questions about service stability as Starlink continues rapid global expansion.
