Trump announces ceasefire between Iran and Israel after 12-day war
US President Donald Trump has announced a ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel after nearly two weeks of intense missile exchanges and US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Taking to Truth Social on Monday evening, Trump declared, “It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE,” adding that it would take effect in six hours—by midnight in Washington and 9:30 am IST—once both nations conclude their ongoing missions.
Trump, who had previously condemned Iran, struck a conciliatory tone, thanking Tehran and praising both sides for their “Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence” in ending what he dubbed “THE 12 DAY WAR.”
The ceasefire comes after the US bombed three key Iranian nuclear sites—in Isfahan, Natanz, and Fordow—prompting a symbolic Iranian missile strike on a US base in Qatar, which Trump said caused no casualties. “They’ve gotten it all out of their ‘system’, and there will, hopefully, be no further HATE,” he wrote.
Although the details of the ceasefire remain vague, Trump outlined a phased plan: Iran would cease hostilities first, followed by Israel 12 hours later. After 24 hours, the truce would be declared official.
The announcement follows weeks of rising tensions that began when Israel launched preemptive strikes ahead of US-Iran nuclear talks. The conflict drew the US in, despite little support from its allies. Trump claimed that the US strikes had “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear potential.
The ceasefire comes ahead of a scheduled UN Security Council meeting on the 2015 nuclear deal, which Trump had withdrawn from during his presidency.
