Trump agrees to US participation in G20 Summit: South African President

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed Monday that US President Donald Trump has agreed to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg this November. The summit will also mark the official handover of the G20 presidency from South Africa to the United States.

Ramaphosa shared the update in his weekly address, following his recent visit to the US. He acknowledged past tensions between the two nations, partly due to misinformation campaigns, including false claims about a so-called genocide and violence against white farmers.

Since Trump’s inauguration, the US had skipped several G20 meetings hosted by South Africa, including high-level finance and foreign affairs sessions. Reports indicated US agencies had even been told to avoid South Africa’s G20-related engagements.

Ramaphosa called his US visit a success, noting a new economic cooperation channel agreed upon during talks with Trump. The initiative aims to advance discussions on tariffs and broader trade issues.

He also invited the US to send a delegation to South Africa to explore investment and trade opportunities.
