UK launches 50-day defence push to arm Ukraine and pressure Russia

British Defence Secretary John Healey has announced a new 50-day military support initiative for Ukraine, aimed at increasing pressure on Russia and accelerating peace negotiations. The campaign, unveiled at the Ukraine Defence Contact Group (UDCG) meeting on Monday, will focus on delivering critical air defence ammunition to bolster Ukraine’s defence capabilities.

Healey stated on X (formerly Twitter) that the UK stands behind the collective goal of arming Ukraine to “force Putin to the negotiating table.” The announcement comes on the heels of a warning from former US President Donald Trump, who said that NATO allies are ramping up arms deliveries and that Russia could face additional sanctions if it does not engage in peace talks within 50 days.

During the UDCG meeting, Healey also confirmed a new UK-Germany partnership to supply air defence missiles to Ukraine. This joint move is part of a broader European strategy to reinforce Ukraine’s ability to counter Russian aerial threats.

The British Ministry of Defence reported that over the past two months, the UK has already provided more than £150 million ($202.5 million) worth of artillery and air defence missiles to Ukraine. The government is also intensifying procurement to deliver hundreds more missiles and thousands of artillery shells in the coming weeks.

In total, Britain plans to spend at least £700 million this year on Ukraine’s defence, with significant portions allocated to air defence and heavy artillery systems.

This UK-led effort represents a key part of the international coalition’s attempt to strengthen Ukraine’s military resilience while pushing for a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflict.
