Ukraine, EU must be part of any US-Russia deal: Kallas
European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has stressed that any agreement between the United States and Russia on the Ukraine conflict must involve both Ukraine and the EU. Her remarks come ahead of a planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15 to discuss a possible ceasefire — the first such talks between the two leaders since 2021.
“Any deal between the US and Russia must have Ukraine and the EU included, for it is a matter of Ukraine’s and the whole of Europe’s security,” Kallas said. She announced plans to convene an online meeting of EU foreign ministers on Monday to chart “our next steps.”
On Saturday, European leaders issued a joint statement emphasising that any diplomatic resolution must safeguard the core security interests of both Ukraine and Europe. Signatories included British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb.
The statement, released ahead of the Trump-Putin talks, underscored the need for robust and credible security guarantees to ensure Ukraine’s ability to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
According to the leaders, lasting peace can only be achieved through a combination of active diplomacy, sustained support for Ukraine, and continued pressure on Russia. They warned that without the inclusion of Ukraine and the EU in negotiations, any agreement risks undermining regional stability.
The Alaska meeting is expected to be closely watched in Europe, where governments remain cautious but hopeful that dialogue could help end the conflict while protecting Europe’s long-term security framework.
