Uruguay’s Presidential Candidates Prepare for Runoff in November

Uruguay’s leading presidential candidates will face a runoff on November 24, as neither secured the necessary majority in the general elections, according to the electoral authorities.

With 92% of votes counted by early Monday, Yamandu Orsi of the left-wing opposition coalition, the Broad Front (FA), received 43.5%, while Alvaro Delgado of the center-right National Party garnered 27%, as reported by Xinhua.

In a speech to thousands of FA supporters in Montevideo’s Old City, Orsi, 57, called for unity and a “last effort” to win the runoff. “In these 27 days, we are going for that last effort, with more determination than ever,” he said.

Delgado, 55, also urged his supporters to aim for victory in the runoff, expressing his commitment to guiding Uruguay towards prosperity and overcoming recent challenges.

More than 2.7 million Uruguayans participated in the elections to select a successor to President Luis Lacalle Pou and to renew the Parliament for the next five years.
