US expresses optimism on tariff talks with Japan

US Ambassador to Japan George Glass on Tuesday voiced strong optimism about the ongoing tariff negotiations between the United States and Japan following a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in Tokyo.

The remarks come ahead of the second round of tariff talks expected later this month. Speaking to reporters, Ambassador Glass described the current state of relations as a “golden age” for both economic cooperation and friendship.

He emphasized that top experts from both nations are actively engaged in discussions aimed at enhancing economic ties and cooperation. ā€œI’m very optimistic about the outcomes,ā€ Glass said, according to Kyodo News.

The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that PM Ishiba and Ambassador Glass exchanged views on the current Japan-US relationship, particularly US-imposed tariffs and broader bilateral cooperation. PM Ishiba reaffirmed that the Japan-US alliance is a “cornerstone” of the country’s diplomacy and security.

Both sides also discussed regional security concerns, including China and North Korea. Prime Minister Ishiba called for continued cooperation on the abductions issue, receiving full support from Ambassador Glass.

Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi also welcomed the ambassador and expressed the importance of deepening security and defense ties while addressing the impact on local communities.
