US Leads with 5,388 Data Centres as India Prepares for Data Centre Boom

As demand for data centers surges due to rising cloud and AI adoption, the United States currently dominates the global market with 5,388 data centres—ten times more than China and most European countries. This positions India on the brink of a significant data centre boom.

Data from Stocklytics.com reveals that the US accounts for 70% more data centres than the next ten largest markets combined. Germany ranks second with 520 data centres, followed by the UK with 512. China, the fourth-largest player, has 449 listed data centres.

Canada, France, and Australia round out the top seven, with 336, 315, and 307 data centres, respectively. Japan holds the tenth spot with 219 operational data centres.

The rapid growth of AI technologies, which demand extensive computing power and storage, has contributed to the data centre boom, driving market growth by 52% since 2017 and raising its value to $416 billion.

The global data centre market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.45%, potentially reaching half a trillion dollars by 2027. Statista Market Insights estimates that the US data centre market will generate over $120 billion, representing about 30% of total market revenue, in 2024.

India is swiftly advancing in the global data centre landscape, with the potential to add another 500 MW of capacity over the next four years. The sector doubled in size, expanding from 540 MW in 2019 to 1,011 MW in 2023, making India one of the fastest-growing markets globally.

Expected to grow at a CAGR of 26% over the next three years, the data centre sector is attracting significant investment interest, ranging from growth-stage private equity to long-term pension and sovereign wealth funds.

In the first half of this year, India experienced a 21% increase in data centre absorption, driven by rising demand for edge data centres in tier 2 and tier 3 cities, according to Savills India.
