US Treasury Secretary denies minerals deal with Ukraine
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has denied reports that the United States plans to sign a mineral resources agreement with Ukraine, contradicting earlier claims that President Donald Trump intended to announce the deal during his address to Congress.
Bessent’s statement follows a tense meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House last week, where the two leaders reportedly clashed over military aid and Ukraine’s mineral resources. The disagreement resulted in Zelensky leaving without finalizing the deal.
“There is no signing planned,” Bessent told Fox News, dismissing speculation that the agreement was imminent.
Despite this, Zelensky remains open to the deal, which would reportedly grant the US access to Ukraine’s mineral resources in exchange for security assurances. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he stated, “Ukraine is ready to sign the agreement at any time and in any format. We see this as a step toward stronger security guarantees.”
Sources had previously suggested that Trump was keen to unveil the deal during his Congressional address, though no official confirmation has come from his administration. Four unnamed insiders told a foreign news outlet that discussions were ongoing, but no final decision had been made.
In an effort to repair relations, Zelensky emphasized Ukraine’s gratitude for US support, acknowledging Trump’s past military assistance, particularly the provision of Javelin anti-tank missiles. He also outlined initial steps toward peace, including a proposed ceasefire on air and sea attacks, as well as the release of prisoners.
“We want to move quickly through all stages and work with the US on a strong final agreement,” Zelensky said, signaling his commitment to continued cooperation despite recent tensions.
With no confirmation from Washington, the future of the US-Ukraine minerals deal remains uncertain.
