China calls Wang Yi’s India visit chance to boost political trust
China has described Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s visit to India as an opportunity to strengthen “political mutual trust” and advance the consensus reached between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Wang Yi arrived in New Delhi on Monday for a two-day visit, during which he will hold the 24th round of Special Representatives’ dialogue on the boundary question with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. The talks are expected to cover border management, trade, and resumption of flight services between the two countries.
Commenting on the visit, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Beijing seeks to “work together with India to implement the important consensus of the leaders, maintain high-level exchanges, enhance political trust, strengthen cooperation, manage differences, and promote stable development of ties.” Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong shared the remarks on X.
On Tuesday, Wang Yi will also meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and call on PM Modi. The timing is significant as it comes just before Modi’s visit to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin later this month.
This will be Modi’s first trip to China since the 2020 Galwan clash, which sharply strained bilateral relations. A recent agreement on patrolling along the 3,500-km Line of Actual Control (LAC) ended the four-year border standoff, creating space for renewed dialogue.
High-level exchanges between the two countries have increased in recent months. In July, Jaishankar attended the SCO Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Tianjin, while Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and NSA Ajit Doval also visited China in June for SCO meetings. Both raised concerns over terrorism, urging stronger action against UN-proscribed groups.
Wang Yi’s visit is seen as a critical step toward easing tensions and paving the way for constructive engagement at the SCO Summit.
