Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi calls on PM Modi, delivers Xi’s SCO invite

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Tuesday, delivering a personal message and invitation from President Xi Jinping for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit scheduled later this month in Tianjin.

Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China, highlighted the positive outcome of his bilateral discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and the 24th round of the Special Representatives’ dialogue, which he co-chaired with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval during his two-day visit to India.

Following the meeting, Prime Minister Modi shared his views on X, noting that since his talks with President Xi in Kazan last year, India-China relations have witnessed steady progress. “Stable, predictable, and constructive ties between India and China will contribute significantly to regional as well as global peace and prosperity,” he wrote.

Modi underscored the importance of maintaining peace and tranquility along the border, reiterating India’s commitment to seeking a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi welcomed the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra as a sign of improving ties guided by mutual respect, interests, and sensitivities. He thanked Xi for the invitation to the SCO Summit and confirmed his participation, while expressing support for China’s presidency of the multilateral grouping.

The meeting comes at a crucial moment, as both nations seek to manage differences and enhance cooperation within the framework of the SCO, with an eye on strengthening regional stability and economic engagement.
