Zohran Mamdani wins New York Democratic mayoral primary in major upset

Indian-origin politician Zohran Mamdani has emerged as the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in a stunning primary upset.

Mamdani, a 33-year-old Muslim and self-described democratic socialist, secured 43.5% of the vote compared to Cuomo’s 36.3%, according to local media reports. His victory marks a major shift in the city’s political landscape, energizing the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.

Born to acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair and Ugandan-Indian academic Mahmood Mamdani, Zohran has long been active in grassroots politics. Backed by the Democratic Socialists of America, he ran on a platform focused on affordable housing, climate action, and police reform.

Following his win, Mamdani quoted Nelson Mandela on social media: “It always seems impossible until it’s done. My friends, it is done. And you are the ones who did it. I am honoured to be your Democratic nominee for the Mayor of New York City.”

The primary was held during an intense heatwave, with polls closing late Wednesday night. While final certification may take days, Mamdani’s commanding lead makes him the presumptive nominee.

His victory reflects broader shifts within the Democratic Party, which continues to wrestle with internal divisions following Donald Trump’s return to the presidency. Mamdani’s appeal to younger, diverse voters and his strong social media campaign gave him a decisive edge.

Cuomo, once a dominant figure in New York politics, began the race with high name recognition and centrist endorsements, including backing from former President Bill Clinton. However, his campaign faltered under the weight of past scandals, including harassment allegations and criticism of his pandemic response.

Mamdani’s win signals a generational and ideological shift in New York’s political direction.
