Trump slams India over trade and tariffs, calls ties ‘one-sided disaster’

US President Donald Trump has once again targeted India over trade, calling the business relationship between Washington and New Delhi a “one-sided disaster.”

In a post on Truth Social, Trump alleged that India exports “massive amounts of goods” to the United States while imposing high tariff barriers that prevent American companies from gaining fair access to the Indian market. “What few people understand is that we do very little business with India, but they do a tremendous amount of business with us,” he wrote.

Trump claimed that India has historically maintained “the highest tariffs of any country,” which he said have created an unfair and unbalanced relationship lasting “for decades.” He argued that this has left American businesses at a disadvantage, even as the US continues to serve as India’s “biggest client.”

The President also took aim at India’s defense and energy deals with Russia, saying: “India buys most of its oil and military products from Russia, very little from the US.” According to him, India has now “offered to cut tariffs to nothing, but it’s getting late.”

This is not Trump’s first swipe at New Delhi. On August 4, he criticized India’s purchase of Russian crude oil, accusing it of reselling much of it on the open market for profit. Senior officials in his administration, including Senior Trade Advisor Peter Navarro and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, have echoed similar concerns, pressing India to reduce reliance on Russian energy.

India has firmly rejected these accusations, describing the 50 percent US tariffs on its exports as “unfair and unjustified.”

Trump’s sharp comments come as Prime Minister Narendra Modi attends the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, where he held bilateral meetings with Russian and Chinese leaders.
