The Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago (HTGC) hosted “Chaitanya,” a fundraising program celebrating spiritual wisdom, classical dance and selfless service, on Saturday, August 8, in support of its Vivekananda Spiritual Center (VSC).

Opened in 2010 and renovated in 2025, the VSC conducts weekly programs dedicated to gaining, nurturing and sharing spiritual wisdom. Its three foundational objectives—adoration of the Supreme, fellowship and selfless service—are centered on spiritual growth.

“Chaitanya” was presented as an imagined dialogue between Swami Vivekananda and his followers, exploring themes including bhakti, or devotion; the role of worship in the pursuit of enlightenment; and the significance of deities such as Rama, Krishna, Shiva and Goddess Kali. The program also drew lessons from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Bhagavad Gita, while emphasizing compassion and the importance of a mother’s presence.

Answers in the presentation were drawn from Swami Vivekananda’s recorded quotations, with classical dance sequences woven throughout to interpret his teachings. The program concluded with an excerpt from his renowned address at the World’s Parliament of Religions.

The performance was choreographed, directed and performed by Nirmala Madhava of California’s PAMPA Dance Academy, established in 1992. Twenty dancers from PAMPA participated. Madhava has choreographed numerous traditional and original Bharata Natyam and Kathak compositions and has trained dancers internationally.

The fundraising program raised more than $25,000 after expenses. Once an outstanding pledge is fulfilled, the total is expected to approximately double. The funds will support future VSC programs and the development of a digital media library containing religious and spiritual resources.

Planned uses include educational materials for Hinduism 101, Dharmic Values and Bhagavad Gita for Children; video-recording equipment; a large television for educational programs; outreach education subscriptions; services for interfaith families; and support for artists participating in VSC programs. A portion will also help launch selfless-service projects through the VSC Youth Wing.

“Chaitanya” also strengthened public awareness of the VSC and its growing role in the community. HTGC maintains close ties with the Chicago-based Vivekananda Vedanta Society and used the program to deepen its relationship with Sevalaya, an India-based nonprofit organization dedicated to service.

The event highlighted the intersection of spiritual education, cultural expression and community service, while providing an opportunity to connect with organizations sharing similar values.
