Chicago hosted the inaugural Chicago Indian Fashion Week (CIFW) on October 10, bringing together designers, models, artists and community members for an event celebrating Indian fashion, art and cultural heritage.

Founded by Jigar Shah, the event featured six designers and 50 models, attracting more than 300 guests. The program combined runway presentations with cultural performances, Indian-inspired floral art, saree-themed décor, music, dance and Indian cuisine.

The organizers said the initiative aims to create a platform for Indian designers, artisans and creative professionals to reach wider audiences while strengthening cultural connections between India and the United States.

Fashion meets Indian heritage

The runway presentations showcased a range of Indian fashion, highlighting traditional craftsmanship alongside contemporary design. Floral installations and saree-inspired decorations reflected Indian artistic traditions, while live performances added a cultural dimension to the evening.

The event also featured international fashion personalities and Bollywood talent, according to the organizers. Participation by Chicago-based and international creatives reflected the event’s emphasis on cross-cultural collaboration.

For Shah, the inaugural edition represents the first step toward establishing an annual platform for Indian fashion and the arts in the Midwest.

“Chicago Indian Fashion Week was never envisioned as just another fashion show. It was created to give Indian fashion, art, craftsmanship, and culture the international platform they deserve,” Shah said.

He said the initiative seeks to create opportunities for designers, artists and entrepreneurs while introducing broader audiences to India’s creative traditions.

Sustainability and community engagement

Sustainability was another theme of the inaugural event. Organizers highlighted circular fashion, responsible design and the role of Indian textiles and craftsmanship in promoting more sustainable approaches to the fashion industry.

The event also supported Bookwallah, a charitable organization, incorporating a philanthropic component into the celebration.

The organizers said their broader vision extends beyond runway shows to include creative entrepreneurship, artistic partnerships and community engagement. They aim to develop opportunities for emerging designers and artisans while encouraging collaborations between Indian and American creative professionals.
