The Consulate General of India in Chicago commemorated the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 with a large community gathering at the National India Hub in Schaumburg on June 21. The event brought together hundreds of yoga practitioners, wellness enthusiasts, community leaders, and families from across the Midwest to celebrate the ancient Indian tradition of yoga and its enduring relevance in modern life.
Observed under the global theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” the program highlighted the role of yoga in promoting physical health, mental well-being, and emotional balance throughout all stages of life. Participants took part in a guided session based on the internationally recognized Common Yoga Protocol, performing a series of yoga postures, breathing exercises, and meditation practices designed to enhance overall wellness.
The event reflected the growing popularity of yoga as a holistic approach to healthy living and demonstrated its ability to bring together people from diverse backgrounds in a spirit of harmony and mindfulness. Numerous cultural, spiritual, educational, and community organizations from across the region joined in support of the celebration, underscoring the widespread appeal of yoga and its message of unity.
In addition to the Chicago-area gathering, International Day of Yoga programs were organized across Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin with the support of local organizations and community groups. Collectively, these events drew thousands of participants throughout the Midwest, making the 2026 observance one of the region’s largest celebrations of International Day of Yoga.
The annual observance, first established by the United Nations in 2014, continues to serve as a global platform for promoting health, wellness, mindfulness, and cross-cultural understanding through the practice of yoga.
