The Global Indian Diaspora Foundation (GIDF), a Chicago-based nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Indian heritage, strengthening community engagement, fostering humanitarian initiatives, and building bridges between the Indian diaspora and the broader American society, will celebrate the 80th Independence Day of India with a special commemorative event on Friday, August 14, at the International University of Vedic Wellness (IUVW) in Streamwood, Illinois.

The celebration will feature Lieutenant General K.J.S. “Tiny” Dhillon, PVSM, UYSM, YSM, VSM (Retd.), one of India’s most distinguished retired military commanders, and will also include the U.S. launch of his latest book, Operation SINDOOR: The Untold Story of India’s Deep Strikes.

The program will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the Indian National Flag Hoisting Ceremony, followed by a keynote address by Lt. Gen. Dhillon. The day’s events will also include a book signing session, recognition of military veterans for their service, a cultural program celebrating the spirit of India, and conclude with lunch.

A major highlight of the celebration will be the launch of Operation SINDOOR: The Untold Story of India’s Deep Strikes, a book that offers readers an insider’s perspective on India’s military operations and strategic decision-making. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet Lt. Gen. Dhillon during a book signing session, while advance reservations for signed copies have been made available by the organizers.

Lt. Gen. Kanwal Jeet Singh “Tiny” Dhillon is a highly decorated retired officer of the Indian Army, whose military career spans nearly four decades. He served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps (XV Corps), one of the Indian Army’s most strategically significant formations responsible for safeguarding the Line of Control and leading counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir. During his distinguished career, he commanded several key operational formations and played an important role in India’s national security.

For his exemplary leadership and service, Lt. Gen. Dhillon has been awarded some of India’s highest military honors, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Uttam Yudh Seva Medal (UYSM), Yudh Seva Medal (YSM), and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM). Following his retirement, he has remained actively involved in leadership development, strategic affairs, public speaking, and national security discussions.

According to GIDF, the event is intended not only to commemorate India’s Independence Day but also to honor the sacrifices of military veterans, inspire younger generations through the experiences of distinguished national leaders, and strengthen the connection between the Indian diaspora and their heritage.

The celebration is expected to attract Indian-American families, veterans, students, professionals, and community leaders from across the Midwest for a day of patriotism, reflection, cultural pride, and community fellowship.
