Hindu heritage preserved in Skokie’s 2025 Time Capsule
By: Dr. Avi Verma
Hindu heritage has become part of Skokie’s historical record with the sealing of the 2025 Time Capsule at the Skokie Public Library on June 7, marking a proud moment for the Hindu and Indian American community.
The Time Capsule, created through a collaboration among the Skokie Heritage Museum, Skokie Historical Society and Skokie Public Library, will remain sealed for 25 years and will be opened in 2050. The project is designed to preserve a snapshot of Skokie’s civic, cultural and community life in 2025 for future generations.
The capsule includes contributions from local organizations, schools, businesses and community leaders, reflecting the diversity of one of Illinois’ most multicultural communities.
Among the selected contributions was a donation by Pramod Joshi, who serves on the Board of Directors of the Gandhi Memorial Foundation. According to Stephanie Guthrie, Joshi contributed a Diwali Awareness collage and a copy of his speech on Hindu heritage, which was delivered at Skokie Village Hall. The items were displayed for public viewing during the Time Capsule Sealing event before being preserved.
For the Hindu community, the inclusion of Diwali Awareness and Hindu heritage carries deep significance. It ensures that future generations will see how Hindu traditions, values and spiritual teachings contributed to Skokie’s multicultural fabric during the early decades of the 21st century.
The recognition also reflects years of community efforts to promote cultural awareness, interfaith understanding and civic engagement. As Diwali and other Hindu traditions gain wider visibility in public institutions, their inclusion in the Time Capsule highlights the growing role of Indian American and Hindu communities in shaping local life.
When the capsule is opened in 2050, future residents will find evidence of a community that valued both heritage and diversity. The presence of Hindu heritage in the collection will stand as a reminder of how cultural identity, faith and shared civic life helped strengthen Skokie’s community bonds.
The milestone represents more than preservation. It is a bridge between past, present and future, honoring Hindu heritage as part of Skokie’s evolving story.
