The Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) USA celebrated America’s 250th Independence Anniversary on July 4 at Hoover Forest Preserve, bringing together nearly 100 participants, including HSS volunteers, families, and community members, for a program that blended patriotism with reflections on shared civic and cultural values.

The celebration began with the hoisting of the United States flag, followed by the singing of the U.S. National Anthem, as attendees gathered to honor the nation’s historic milestone and express gratitude for the freedoms and opportunities America has provided to generations of immigrants.

Speakers described the nation’s 250th anniversary as a once-in-a-generation occasion that offers an opportunity to reflect on the country’s remarkable journey since 1776 while reaffirming the responsibilities of citizenship. They also acknowledged the contributions of Hindu Americans in strengthening American society through volunteerism, education, entrepreneurship, public service, and community engagement.

A significant portion of the program was dedicated to remembering Swami Vivekananda, whose life shares a unique historical connection with America’s Independence Day. Speakers noted that Swami Vivekananda passed away on July 4, 1902, and reflected on his lasting influence following his historic address at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in 1893, where he introduced Hindu philosophy to a global audience and promoted interfaith understanding.

The program also highlighted Swami Vivekananda’s poem dedicated to the Fourth of July, in which he celebrated the ideals of freedom and liberty. Speakers observed that these principles resonate deeply with Hindu philosophy, particularly the concept of Dharma, which emphasizes righteous living, responsibility, and service to society. They noted that the American pursuit of liberty and opportunity complements the Hindu belief in living a life guided by ethical values and selfless action.

Throughout the event, speakers emphasized that the celebration was not only a commemoration of America’s independence but also an opportunity for Hindu Americans to reflect on their dual heritage—honoring the nation they proudly call home while remaining rooted in timeless cultural and spiritual traditions.

The gathering concluded with fellowship among attendees, reinforcing HSS USA’s mission of promoting character building, community service, cultural awareness, and social harmony.

As the United States marked 250 years of independence, the HSS USA celebration served as a reminder of the shared values of freedom, civic responsibility, and service that continue to unite diverse communities across the country.
