Union Finance Minister to interact with community members during Chicago visit

The Indian-American community in Chicago is preparing to welcome Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman, who is scheduled to visit the city and interact with members of the Indian diaspora.

The Consulate General of India in Chicago has announced that Sitharaman will address a gathering of community members on Saturday, August 29, 2026, during her visit to Chicago.

The interaction is expected to provide members of the Indian diaspora an opportunity to hear directly from the Finance Minister on issues concerning India’s economy, economic reforms, India’s growing global role and the country’s expanding engagement with the Indian diaspora.

Sitharaman has been a central figure in India’s economic policymaking and has overseen several major initiatives involving taxation, financial-sector reforms, investment, infrastructure and India’s efforts to strengthen its position as one of the world’s major economies.

Her visit comes at a significant moment for India, as the country continues to expand its economic and strategic engagement with the United States. Chicago, with its large and diverse Indian-American population and strong business and professional community, remains an important center of India-U.S. people-to-people and economic ties.

The Finance Minister’s interaction is also expected to attract interest from Indian-American business leaders, entrepreneurs, professionals and community organizations seeking greater insight into India’s economic trajectory and opportunities for diaspora engagement.

The Consulate said it is “eagerly looking forward” to Sitharaman’s visit and her interaction with the Indian community.
