Skokie Proclaims November Hindu American Heritage Month

The Village of Skokie has proclaimed November 2026 as Hindu American Heritage Month, recognizing Diwali and the contributions of Hindu Americans.

During a recent board meeting, Mayor Ann Tennes
welcomed local community members, including Susan Patel, Pramod Joshi, Kusam Joshi and State Senator Ram Villivalam. Clerk Minal
Desai read the proclamation.

It highlights Diwali, the five-day Festival of Lights beginning November 8, 2026, which symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. Celebrated by millions of Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, and Sikhs, the holiday features oil lamps, sweets, and family gatherings.

The proclamation notes Hinduism’s ancient roots and its values of nonviolence, truth, and pluralism. It praises Hindu Americans’ contributions to business, technology, medicine, education, and the arts in Skokie and beyond.

Mayor Tennes encouraged residents to honor these contributions and celebrate Diwali’s enduring light. The recognition drew applause, followed by a gathering at the flag.
