Delhi emerging as global model for sustainable public transport: CM Atishi on RRTS

Delhi is rapidly becoming a global model for sustainable and efficient public transport, thanks to the introduction of transformative projects like the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) and significant expansions in metro connectivity, according to Chief Minister Atishi.

In an exclusive interview, Atishi expressed her pride in the capital’s growing reputation as a leader in sustainable transportation. She highlighted several ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing connectivity within the National Capital Region (NCR) and beyond, with a focus on public transport systems that contribute to a cleaner, greener environment.

The RRTS line, which connects Sahibabad to New Ashok Nagar, is a key part of this effort. The project, a collaboration between the central government, and the state governments of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana, is designed to improve regional connectivity within the NCR. On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a 13-kilometre stretch of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor between Sahibabad and New Ashok Nagar. This corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Delhi and the adjoining areas, promoting better economic integration across the region.

The project has been constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 4,600 crore, with the Delhi government contributing Rs 1,260 crore. Atishi emphasized that the RRTS line will not only improve connectivity but also foster economic development in Delhi, providing a smoother and more sustainable transport alternative.

In addition to the RRTS line, the city is also witnessing the launch of two major metro projects. The Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line is being extended from Janakpuri West to Krishna Park, while a new phase of the metro will connect Rithala to Kundli, further expanding the capital’s metro network. Atishi noted that over the last decade, Delhi has seen a significant metro expansion, with 200 kilometres of metro lines already completed and another 250 kilometres under construction.

The Chief Minister acknowledged that the Delhi government has invested a significant amount, Rs 7,268 crore in the metro over the past decade, contributing to the overall development of the city’s public transport network. She expressed her delight at Delhi’s increasing recognition as a model for sustainable public transportation, emphasizing that the city is not only setting a benchmark for India but for the world.

Atishi also spoke about the crucial role public transport plays in reducing pollution and traffic congestion, furthering the government’s vision of a cleaner, greener, and more efficient transportation system. “I am delighted to see that Delhi is now recognised for its efficient and sustainable public transport systems. It is setting an example not only for the rest of the country but for the entire world,” she said.

As the capital continues to invest in expanding its transportation infrastructure, Atishi’s vision for Delhi is to create a more connected, sustainable, and economically vibrant city. The ongoing and future transport projects reflect this commitment to ensuring that Delhi remains at the forefront of public transport innovation and sustainability.
