First major US winter storm of year hammers Mid-Atlantic states

The first major winter storm of the year has slammed into the US Mid-Atlantic region, causing widespread disruptions across several states. The storm, which brought heavy snow, freezing rain, and strong winds, has led to power outages, hazardous travel conditions, and school closures.

As snow accumulated in parts of Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Maryland, authorities issued warnings for dangerous road conditions and advised residents to stay off the roads. In some areas, snow accumulations reached up to 12 inches, with more expected to fall throughout the day.

The storm has also brought freezing temperatures, exacerbating the impact of the snow and ice. Thousands of people have been left without power as trees and power lines fell under the weight of the snow and ice.

Airlines have canceled or delayed hundreds of flights, particularly at airports in Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. Travel disruptions are expected to continue as the storm moves northeast, with additional snowfall forecasted for New Jersey and New York.

Officials are urging residents to prepare for ongoing cold temperatures and to keep emergency kits on hand in case of extended power outages. The storm is expected to gradually move out of the region by Tuesday, but the recovery from its effects will take time.
