India, Nordic nations deepen partnership with focus on green technology and innovation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced that India and the Nordic countries have agreed to elevate their ties through a new Green Technology and Innovation Strategic Partnership during the third India-Nordic Summit held in Oslo.
Addressing a joint press conference with Nordic leaders, PM Modi said the partnership will combine the technological strengths of Nordic nations with India’s growing innovation ecosystem to create sustainable and trusted global solutions.
He highlighted that Iceland’s expertise in geothermal energy and fisheries, Norway’s strengths in the blue economy and Arctic research, and broader Nordic leadership in maritime sustainability would be integrated with India’s technological capabilities and skilled workforce.
The Prime Minister also emphasized that the collaboration would connect Sweden’s advanced manufacturing and defence sectors, Finland’s telecom and digital technologies, and Denmark’s cybersecurity and health-tech expertise with India’s rapidly expanding innovation landscape.
PM Modi described research and innovation as a key pillar of India-Nordic relations and announced plans to increase collaboration between universities, research laboratories and startup ecosystems. Both sides also agreed to strengthen cooperation in Arctic and polar research.
Highlighting growing economic engagement, Modi said bilateral trade between India and Nordic countries has nearly quadrupled over the past decade. He added that investments from Nordic nations into India have risen by nearly 200 percent during the same period, contributing to job creation and economic growth in both regions.
The Prime Minister said recent trade agreements would further accelerate economic cooperation. He referred to the implementation of the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement with Norway, Iceland and other EFTA nations from October 2025, along with the recently concluded India-European Union Free Trade Agreement involving Denmark, Finland and Sweden.
According to Modi, these agreements are expected to open a “new golden era” in relations between India and the Nordic countries by expanding opportunities in trade, investment, sustainability and technological innovation.
Calling India and Nordic countries “natural partners,” PM Modi said their shared commitment to democracy, multilateralism and the rule of law forms a strong foundation for long-term cooperation.
He also thanked Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre for hosting the summit and reaffirmed India’s commitment to building stronger partnerships with Nordic nations across emerging sectors and future technologies.
