India-Vietnam ties making steady progress in defence, economic sectors

India and Vietnam are continuing to strengthen their strategic partnership with growing cooperation across defence, trade, technology, and security sectors, according to a recent report highlighting the expanding ties between the two Indo-Pacific nations.

The report, published by The Secretariat, noted that bilateral relations have gained steady momentum following the elevation of the India-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Vietnamese President To Lam’s recent State Visit to India in May, shortly after assuming office, was described as a significant indicator of the importance Hanoi places on its relationship with New Delhi.

During the visit, both countries agreed to deepen economic engagement and set a new bilateral trade target of $25 billion by 2030. India and Vietnam also pledged to improve market access for various products, including agricultural goods.

The two sides emphasized the importance of strengthening supply chains in sectors of mutual interest. Vietnam expressed interest in diversifying its import sources and increasing purchases of Indian products to support its domestic manufacturing and export industries.

Both countries also agreed to explore measures that would create a more business-friendly regulatory environment, including easing standards compliance and certification procedures for companies operating in each other’s markets.

The report highlighted several priority sectors for future investment cooperation, including manufacturing, logistics, renewable energy, electric vehicles, smart agriculture, information technology, healthcare, tourism, aquaculture, and agro-processing.

India and Vietnam are also looking to strengthen cooperation between startup ecosystems and innovation centres to boost technological collaboration and entrepreneurship.

On the strategic front, defence and security cooperation remains a key pillar of the bilateral relationship.

The two nations agreed to expand collaboration in traditional and emerging defence areas, including joint military exercises, defence policy dialogue, naval and air force exchanges, maritime security, peacekeeping operations, defence technology co-development, and capacity building.

The report also noted increasing cooperation in cybersecurity, intelligence sharing, counter-terrorism efforts, and tackling transnational crimes such as money laundering, online scams, and high-tech crime.

Training and skill development for law enforcement personnel, cybersecurity response teams, and United Nations peacekeeping operations are also being prioritised.

India and Vietnam’s growing strategic alignment is increasingly viewed as an important component of the broader Indo-Pacific framework, with both countries sharing common concerns regarding regional stability, maritime security, and resilient economic partnerships.

The expanding partnership reflects a broader effort by both nations to strengthen economic resilience, diversify strategic cooperation, and enhance regional stability amid evolving geopolitical dynamics in Asia.
