India stands with people of Nepal: PM Modi expresses grief, offers assistance amid deadly rains

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday condoled the loss of lives and widespread destruction caused by heavy rains and landslides in Nepal, reaffirming India’s solidarity with its Himalayan neighbour during the crisis.

“The loss of lives and damage caused by heavy rains in Nepal is distressing. We stand with the people and the Government of Nepal in this difficult time. As a friendly neighbour and first responder, India remains committed to providing any assistance that may be required,” PM Modi posted on X.

According to Nepalese authorities, at least 39 people have died in monsoon-related incidents since Friday, with 36 fatalities in Koshi province and three in Madhesh. The continuous downpour has triggered devastating landslides, floods, and lightning strikes across several districts, displacing families and obstructing key highways.

The Armed Police Force Headquarters in Kathmandu reported that 11 people are missing and 13 others injured. Ilam district alone recorded 27 deaths due to landslides, while several others were killed in lightning and flooding incidents in Udayapur, Khotang, and Bhojpur.

Transportation across Nepal remains severely disrupted. Major highways connecting Kathmandu Valley — including the Prithvi, BP, and Araniko highways — have been blocked by landslides, halting vehicle movement to and from the capital. The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division has suspended long-distance transport services from five provinces due to safety concerns.

While rainfall intensity reduced slightly by Sunday morning, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology warned of potential heavy rain in the hilly districts of eastern Koshi Province later in the day. Rescue operations are underway amid continuing challenges.
