RG Kar case: CFSL report creates doubts about actual ‘scene of crime’
A report submitted by the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has raised doubts about the “scene of the crime” in the ghastly rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in August.
The body of the victim was discovered in the seminar hall within the hospital premises of R.G. Kar on the morning of August 9. Initially, both the Kolkata Police and later the CBI treated the seminar hall as the “scene of crime.”
However, the CFSL report submitted to the CBI has stated that there is no apparent sign of a scuffle in the seminar room, according to sources familiar with the development.
Sources further indicated that the CFSL report supports concerns raised by some members of the medical fraternity in the state from the outset, suggesting that the actual “scene of the crime” may have been elsewhere. The body might have been moved to the seminar hall after the rape and murder to mislead the investigation.
This explosive CFSL report emerged on the same day that the Calcutta High Court’s single Judge Bench, led by Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, was set to hear a petition from the victim’s parents seeking a fresh probe into the case from the beginning.
Sources said that during the initial investigation by Kolkata Police, a total of 40 items were collected from the seminar hall, where the victim’s body was found on August 9.
After the Calcutta High Court directed the CBI to take over the investigation, several items recovered from the seminar hall were sent to CFSL for examination. On August 14, a team of CFSL experts also physically examined the alleged scene of the crime, i.e., the seminar hall.
Based on forensic reports of the seized items and the physical examination of the scene, CFSL submitted a report to the CBI, which has now cast doubts about the actual scene of the crime.
