Trump calls suspect ‘sick’, praises agents after foiled White House dinner attack
U.S. President Donald Trump has described the suspect behind the foiled attack at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner as “a sick guy,” while praising the swift response of security agencies that prevented a potentially serious incident.
Speaking in an interview, Trump said the suspect appeared deeply troubled and referenced a manifesto that indicated extremist views. He also suggested that family members may have previously alerted authorities about the individual, though those warnings may not have been effectively acted upon in time.
“The guy is a sick guy… very troubled,” Trump said, adding that he became aware of earlier concerns only after the incident unfolded.
The attempted attack, which disrupted one of Washington’s most high-profile annual events, was quickly neutralized by the United States Secret Service and other law enforcement personnel. According to Trump, the suspect was stopped before he could get anywhere near the secured venue.
“He never even came close to getting through the doors,” Trump said, describing the response as immediate and decisive. He noted that multiple layers of security were in place, ensuring that even a breach of the outer perimeter would not have compromised the safety of those inside.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the suspect allegedly intended to target the President and other senior officials. She confirmed that attendees, including Trump and the First Lady, were swiftly moved to safety during the incident.
Leavitt also highlighted the bravery of law enforcement personnel, noting that one agent was injured while confronting the attacker but continued to act to neutralize the threat.
The incident briefly disrupted the event, which traditionally celebrates press freedom and brings together journalists, political leaders, and public figures. Trump expressed hope that the dinner could be rescheduled soon, emphasizing that such acts should not disrupt national events.
“We can’t let these criminals change the course of events in our country,” he said.
The President also pointed to plans for enhanced security infrastructure at the White House complex, including a new secure ballroom designed to host large gatherings with advanced safety measures.
Authorities continue to investigate the suspect’s background, including prior warnings and possible motives, as questions emerge about whether earlier intervention could have prevented the incident.
