Women’s WC: Sophie Devine praises New Zealand’s fight despite loss to Australia

New Zealand captain Sophie Devine focused on the positives after her team’s 89-run loss to Australia in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 opener in Indore, praising the White Ferns’ fight and resilience in challenging conditions.

Despite chasing a formidable target against the reigning champions, New Zealand showed grit and determination throughout the 50-over contest. Devine’s sensational century brought life to their tough chase, showcasing her ability to perform under pressure.

“I’ll just say come and feel my shirt, I think you’ll see how tough that was,” Devine said, reflecting on her innings. “The work that the girls have done over the last six to 12 months prepared us for exactly this kind of knock. Every member of this group has been slogging away behind the scenes, ensuring they’re fit and ready to contribute.”

Devine emphasised that the team’s approach mattered more than the result. “Just happy with the fight this team showed. A couple of years ago we would have thrown in the towel early. It shows the mindset of the group that we stay in the fight. I’m incredibly proud of how everyone contributed across the full 100 overs,” she added.

The skipper also highlighted the performances of teammates like Izzy Gaze, Maddy Green, and Brooke Halliday, praising their focus on strengths and resilience under pressure.

Looking ahead, Devine said results are important but not the only measure of success. “The way we played tonight makes me proud, and we know we can push the best teams hard. With six pool matches to go, we’re still in the hunt for a top-four finish and a semi-final berth,” she noted.

New Zealand’s opener against Australia offered a strong statement of intent: the White Ferns are ready to compete and fight at the highest level throughout the tournament.
