Women’s WC: Molineux returns, Australia elects to bat first against New Zealand
Left-arm spinner Sophie Molineux has returned to Australia’s playing eleven after recovering from knee surgery, as captain Alyssa Healy won the toss and chose to bat first against New Zealand in their 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup opener at Holkar Stadium on Wednesday.
Molineux’s inclusion means veteran pacer Megan Schutt has been left out. Australia, seven-time world champions and reigning titleholders, have opted for an attacking pace combination featuring Darcie Brown and Kim Garth. This match also marks Holkar Stadium’s debut as a venue for international women’s cricket.
Healy said the team aims to build momentum in challenging conditions. “Just put some runs on the board and see what happens. The group is in a great place. We’re looking at improving at every opportunity, taking women’s cricket forward,” she said.
New Zealand, returning to ODI action after six months, are led by captain Sophie Devine. She said batting first was an option but emphasized confidence in her team’s balance. “Experience through the batting order with Suzie Bates and Georgia Plimmer gives us a really balanced side. Fresh wicket and start of the tournament — we’re not concerned,” Devine added.
Molineux expressed pride in representing her country again. “Results are important, but what matters most is the people around me,” she said.
